Heritage & Gardens
For a relaxing day out, hop aboard a steam train on the Swanage Railway, just 30 minutes from us. The journey takes you through some of Dorset’s prettiest countryside, and you can hop off to explore charming villages along the way. If you enjoy exploring historic places, Highcliffe Castle is 45 minutes away, with its impressive architecture and peaceful grounds perfect for afternoon walks. Also nearby is Kingston Lacy, a stunning National Trust property just a 20-minute drive from Huntick Retreat. A fabulous attraction which also lies near to Huntick Retreat (24 minutes) is Sculpture by the Lakes, 26 acres of beautifully landscaped botanic gardens featuring over 120 works of art.
Garden lovers may also want to venture a bit further to Exbury Gardens, which is an hour drive away in the New Forest but well worth the drive for the beautiful flowers and charming miniature steam railway. Spring is particularly special here, but the gardens are stunning in every season.

Natural Beauty
Nature is all around us here. The Cranborne Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, about 35 minutes away from Huntick Retreat, is wonderful for walks and has some of the darkest night skies you’ll find – perfect for stargazing on clear evenings. The New Forest is just 40 minutes by car, where you can spend whole days exploring ancient woodlands and watching wild ponies roam freely. There are lovely spots for picnics and miles of trails for walking or cycling. Closer to home, Sandbanks Beach is a short drive away, offering one of the best stretches of sand and sea in Dorset. It’s perfect for swimming, sunbathing, or just watching the world go by. Huntick Retreat is also close to some lovely market towns including riverside Wareham (15 minutes), Wimborne (17 minutes), Blandford (22 mins) and Dorchester which was the inspiration for Casterbridge in Thomas Hardy’s novels (30 mins).
Right on Your Doorstep
You don’t need to go far for everyday needs – Lytchett Matravers village is just up the road, with local shops (including a Tesco Express) and a pub. Here at Huntick, we share our space with all sorts of wildlife. You might spot deer in the early morning, foxes at dusk, or badgers if you’re up late. Keep an eye on the sky too – we often see buzzards soaring overhead.
Pop by reception anytime if you’d like suggestions or directions. We’ve lived here for years and love sharing our favourite local spots with guests. Whether you want a quiet walk, a family day out, or the best place for a pub lunch, we’re always happy to help you make the most of your stay.
